Gongs for meditation & sound healing

Guide to sound, size and choice

The gong as gateway to silence

A gong is more than an instrument. It opens a field in which sound, resonance and silence coincide. In meditation, sound healing or inner work, the gong automatically carries you to a layer that is quieter than thoughts, deeper than relaxation.

In the Sound Chapel you will find Europe's largest collection of gongs, a place where you can
listen, play and feel which resonance suits you.

What is a Gong

A gong is a hand-formed percussion instrument rich in overtones. When it sounds, it creates a vibrating field that moves throughout the body.

That resonance opens space, calms the nervous system and supports meditation, healing and deeper awareness.

From ritual to sound healing

Gongs have been used for centuries in ceremonies, rituals and meditation. In modern sound journeys and sound baths, they are a carrier for relaxation, energetic openness and inner reset.

The gong as a meditation instrument

In our concerts and retreats the gong acts as a breathing field. The sound moves through time and space, softening your attention and naturally turning inward.

What types of Gongs are there?

Symphonic / tamtam gongs

These are versatile gongs with a wide, rich sound field. They carry both depth and clarity and are suitable for meditation, groups and therapy.

Art & sculptural gongs

Instruments that merge art and resonance, such as the sculptures of Grotta Sonora. They open up other forms of listening and work strongly on perception.

Planet gongs

Gongs tuned to astronomical frequencies.Their sound is direct, more focused and often feels energetically powerful.

Ceremony & temple gongs

Traditional gongs used in rituals, ceremonies or deep meditation.

The language of the gong

Each gong is a living field of vibration. No two sound the same, each has its own character, its own breath. Here, in the Sound Chapel, resonates a unique collection of gongs, each with a soul of sound.

How to choose the right Gong

Purpose & context

The right gong depends on where and how you want to use it: in a yoga room, a therapy room, for sound concert hall or your own practice.

Player experience

For beginners, gongs with a soft attack are forgiving. Advanced players can opt for more complex or powerful instruments.

Size & Sound Field

Large gongs open a wide sound field and carry depth. Smaller gongs are focused, clear and ideal for meditation or small spaces.

Listening with your whole body

You don't choose a gong with your head. It is the resonance that opens something in you that counts. That is why we like to guide you in the Sound Chapel during a listening session.

Placing and playing a Gong

Bringing a gong to sound starts simply. With attention to space, suspension and playing, its sound unfolds step by step.

Placement & space

A gong needs space to resonate freely. Not out of caution, but so that the sound can unfold unhindered. Distance from walls, height and acoustics determine how open and bearing the sound field develops.

Gong stands

The correct gong position ensures that the gong hangs freely and is balanced with its size and weight.

An appropriate position supports the natural movement of the instrument and allows the resonance to reach its full potential.

Mallets & gong rubbing stick

Mallets define the nature of the sound. Different sizes and thicknesses influence attack, depth and colour: from soft and enveloping to powerful and layered.

Besides traditional mallets, the gong rubbing stick offers a different approach. Rubbing creates a ‘singing’ tone, meditative and continuous, with overtones slowly opening up.

What is the difference between a symphonic gong and a planet gong?

A symphonic gong is versatile and broad. A planet gong is focused, more powerful and tuned to specific frequencies.

A medium-sized gong with a soft attack and balanced sound field is ideal for most beginners.

Between 24” and 32” often fits best. Bigger can, depending on acoustics and purpose.

Dust regularly, play carefully and store on a stable frame. Do not clean with aggressive agents.

You can, but we always recommend listening and feeling live in the Sound Chapel first.
