Sound healing – what can sound reveal to you?

What is sound healing?

Sound healing is not music to listen to. It is a space in which sound is received.

The vibrations of gongs, crystal singing bowls and other overtone instruments travel through the body, without you having to do anything. You simply lie there, breathe and receive. The sound finds its own way past tension, past thoughts and past layers that have sometimes been calling for attention for a long time.

In sound healing, nothing is forced. There is no need to gain any particular insight, nothing needs to be let go of, and there is no specific goal to be achieved. It is precisely when the striving eases that space can emerge.

Sound is not only heard with the ears. It is felt in the body, in the breath, in the nervous system and in the silence between thoughts. The resonance can invite us to slow down, allowing the body to relax more deeply and our attention to gradually turn inwards.

Sometimes sound healing brings a sense of calm.
A bit of exercise now and then.
Sometimes we sense something for which there are no words yet.

What presents itself does not need to be explained or understood. The sound carries, opens up and reflects, without asking anything of you. It is therefore neither a treatment nor an action performed on you. It is an invitation to be present with what is already there. To not have to search, direct or solve anything, just for a moment.

Just to listen. To feel. And to slowly sink back into the silence beneath it all.

Sound healing singing bowls

Where does sound healing come from?

Sound healing does not have a single origin. For thousands of years, sound has been used across different cultures as a gateway to stillness, connection and awareness. Drums, voices, bells, gongs and singing bowls have featured in rituals, ceremonies and moments of transition. Not always to make music, but to open up a space in which something could shift.

In ancient traditions, sound was seen as something that extends beyond the audible. A vibration that moves through the body, focuses the mind and creates space for what lies beneath the surface.

Its form has evolved over time. Instruments were carried from one country to another, rituals found new contexts, and ancient knowledge became interwoven with contemporary insights into relaxation, resonance and the nervous system.

What is known today as sound healing bears traces of all these different traditions. From meditative sound traditions in Asia to the rhythmic use of voice and percussion within indigenous cultures. Not as a single fixed system, but as a collection of ways in which people have used sound to come closer to themselves, to one another and to silence.

At our Sound Chapel in Overlangel, sound healing is not approached as something that is literally repeated from the past. The ancient resonance meets the present moment. There, in the act of listening, sound does once again what it has always done: open up space for presence.

How does sound healing work?

Sound healing works through vibration, resonance and mindfulness.

Sound is not only heard; it also moves physically through the body. The low tones of gongs, the clear frequencies of crystal bowls and the subtle layers of overtone instruments combine to form a soundscape in which the body is allowed to slow down. You don’t have to do anything yourself.

By lying down, listening and receiving, your attention can gradually shift away from thinking and return to feeling. Your breathing may become deeper and any tension may ease. Thoughts may still be present, but you no longer need to follow them.

Sound healing works with resonance. Every sound produces a vibration, and the body receives that vibration in its own way. Some tones are felt deeply, whilst others seem barely audible and instead touch something within the silence.

What happens varies from moment to moment. Sometimes a deep sense of calm arises; at other times, movement can be felt in the body or in the emotional realm. Memories, images or insights may arise, but none of these are necessary. There is no set experience and no outcome that needs to be achieved.

The effect of sound healing lies not only in the instruments, but also in the space around them. In the attunement. In the silence between two sounds. In the moment when the body realises it doesn’t need to hold on for a moment. That is where the softening begins. Not because something is resolved, but because space is created to simply be with what is already there.

What instruments are used?

In sound healing, we use alchemical singing bowls, crystal singing bowls and gongs. Sometimes chimes are added to these.

Each instrument brings its own resonance: from bright and refined to deep and resonant. Together, they form a multi-layered soundscape that is attuned to the moment.

Not following a set pattern, but listening to whatever arises.

What can you expect during a session?

During a sound healing session, you are invited to lie down comfortably, close your eyes and simply receive.

The sounds of gongs, alchemy and crystal singing bowls build up slowly and move through the space. Sometimes deep and resonant, sometimes clear and subtle.

You don’t have to do anything or achieve anything. Perhaps a sense of calm will arise, or you’ll become aware of something, or your thoughts will gradually quieten. Each session unfolds differently, tailored to the moment and to whatever arises.

Who is sound healing suitable for?

Sound healing is for anyone who longs for peace, a chance to slow down and a moment of reconnecting with themselves.

You don’t need any experience of meditation or sound. Just a willingness to lie down, listen and receive.

Whether you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed, need to unwind, or simply want to make space for whatever comes your way… the session meets you where you are.

Experiences and effects

Potential benefits of sound healing

Sound healing can encourage deep relaxation and a sense of spaciousness in both body and mind. The sounds and vibrations help to shift your focus away from thinking and back towards feeling. Your breathing may slow down, tension may ease, and your thoughts may temporarily recede into the background.

After a session, some people experience greater peace, clarity or a sense of connection with themselves. Others find that emotions, images or insights arise without them consciously seeking them out. Every experience is different. Sound healing does not promise a specific outcome. It creates a space in which the body and consciousness are free to respond in their own way.

What might you feel or experience during a session?

During a session, you may experience warmth, tingling, heaviness or, conversely, lightness. Sometimes your breathing deepens, your body relaxes and more space opens up between your thoughts. Emotions, images or memories may also arise. Or perhaps nothing seems to be happening and there is simply silence. There is no ‘right’ experience. Whatever you feel is allowed to be there without needing to be understood.

What might you experience after a session?

Afterwards, you may feel calmer, lighter or more present. Sometimes there is clarity; at other times, a need for silence and to slow down. The sound may continue to resonate in the body, in the breath and in ways that only become apparent later. Whatever has been touched is allowed to unfold further at its own pace.

Sound healing as a complementary therapy, not as a medical treatment

Sound healing can be a valuable addition to moments of tranquillity, relaxation and inner harmony. It is not a substitute for medical or psychological treatment.

No diagnosis is made and no treatment is given. The session provides a space where you can slow down, feel and receive.

In the event of physical or mental health issues, guidance from a doctor or healthcare professional should always take precedence.

When is caution or consultation required?

Although sound healing is a gentle method, the body reacts strongly to vibrations. In the following situations, we ask you to contact us in advance or to consult your doctor first:

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have experience of meditation to be able to experience sound healing?

No. You don’t need to know how to meditate, and you don’t need to quiet your thoughts.

During a sound healing session, you are invited to lie down, listen and receive. The sound naturally draws your attention inwards. All that is needed is the willingness to do nothing for a while.

The terms are often used interchangeably. A sound bath is usually a group experience in which you are immersed in the sounds and vibrations of, for example, gongs, singing bowls and chimes.

Sound healing can be more personalised and tailored to the individual. In the Sound Chapel, each session is shaped by the moment, the individual or the group. It is not based on a fixed programme, but on listening to what arises.

The duration depends on the session you choose and the size of your group. You will be given the exact start and end times when you book.

It’s nice to leave a bit of time afterwards, so you don’t have to head straight back into the hustle and bustle of the day.

Wear soft, comfortable clothing that you can lie down in easily. Warm socks can be a good idea, as your body may cool down slightly during deep relaxation.

Other than that, you don’t need to bring anything in particular. Everything you need to lie down comfortably is provided in the Sound Chapel.

Yes. Sometimes the body relaxes so deeply that you drift off to sleep for a moment.

Even then, the sounds will still be there. You don’t need to stay awake to get the most out of the session. There’s nothing you need to consciously follow, hold on to or understand.

During a sound healing session, you may experience warmth, tingling, a sense of heaviness, lightness or a deep sense of calm. Sometimes emotions, images or memories may surface. At other times, there is simply silence, or it may seem as though little is happening.

Afterwards, you may feel calmer, clearer or more present. Or perhaps you’ll feel the need to slow down or withdraw. The experience may continue to have an effect for some time, in ways that aren’t always easy to put into words straight away.

There is no ‘right’ experience. Whatever arises is welcome.

There is no single frequency that suits everyone.

Some people come from time to time, when they feel the need for peace and space. Others choose to have a session on a regular basis. See what suits you best and give yourself plenty of time to let the experience sink in.

Sound healing doesn’t have to become a routine. Sometimes, just one moment is enough.

If you are pregnant, or if you suffer from tinnitus, hearing problems, hypersensitivity to sound, epilepsy or other physical or mental health conditions, it is important to consult a practitioner beforehand.

Sounds can be played at a lower volume, and certain instruments can be omitted. In cases of tinnitus or hyperacusis, sounds may be perceived as more intense or unpleasant. Sound-induced epileptic seizures are rare, but may occur in some forms of reflex epilepsy.

If in doubt, please discuss with your doctor or practitioner first to see whether participation is appropriate. Sound healing is a complement to relaxation and inner harmony; it is not a substitute for medical or psychological care.

Your body and your boundaries are always the guiding principle.
